I am in need of some challenging and highly engaging novels for advanced readers in second grade. The novels that I have chosen lend themselves to the development of wonderful lessons on history, biographies, and difficult situations of life.
"Esperanza Rising" is a wonderful novel of human acceptance and the ability to rise above our circumstances. This book provides opportunities for deep discussions about challenges people can face in life.
I chose "Jackie Robinson" to teach the children lessons about civil rights, courage, and integrity. I also believe that we will have good conversations about standing up for those less fortunate, learning to value people for their character and not the color of their skin.
Finally, I chose "Among the Hidden" because it is unlike any other book that the students have read. It is set in a dystopian society and will lend itself to discussion about human rights.
