In an effort to study the impact of the Holocaust on our world and to discuss how these atrocities should never again happen, we must study the past to make a better future for our world. My students are struggling readers, who find it difficult to stay focused during reading and have difficult time breaking down word meaning. They often have to use the school provided books in which they are unable to record their ideas, thoughts, and predictions as they read. Providing them with a personal copy will allow them the opportunity to write in the text and track their predictions and analysis, as well as breaking down of difficult vocabulary.
Struggling readers are fearful of complex text- providing them with their own copies to annotate will allow for chunking of difficult text and create a more focused reading opportunity. The Apple VGA adapter will be connected to my SmartBoard and iPad and allow me to model text annotations show them how to tackle complex text. Student will be able to record my model annotations and mirror them as they look to make their own. The colored pencils will be used to highlight different reading skills throughout the novel.
The teacher planning guides and student packet will be used for guided lessons and monitoring of student understanding as they work towards a culminating project in which they identify a school or community concern and develop ways to ensure that whenever we see a problem, we do not become a bystander, we become a problem solver.
