Our projects are focused on how engineers can help solve problems. To be better engineers we want to help our community both environmentally and personally. We have participated in collecting can goods for our area food pantry and saw a need to do more. One of the projects we want to do is to make ‘plarn’. You make plarn out of used plastic bags that you crochet together to create a simple light weight bedroll for anyone that is experiencing homelessness.
By focusing on upcycling the plastic bags we will be helping the environment in another way by creating reusable bags that are stronger and sturdier than in their original state. We found in our research that ironing the plastic bags between parchment paper will actually shrink them down in size allowing us to use duct tape to attach the pieces together for a much stronger bag.
