These communicators will have a huge impact in our sessions with our students with complex medical needs. As we reiterated above, the complex nature of our students and their reliance on alternative communication methods means that sometimes valuable learning and language opportunities are missed. Currently, we are sharing one Big Mack Single Message Communicator between all of our students during sessions and groups. Unfortunately, this means some students don't always get a turn to participate on their own terms. The Big Mack Single Message Communicator will allow students to request turns, comment on activities, volunteer information, play, and interact with their peers and staff when they want to. The iTalk2 will help them choose what message they would like to communicate - for example, maybe they don't want to say "hi" and want to ask their peer "what's up" instead! These interactions in which they are meaningfully engaged with their friends and staff are invaluable! These communicators will give our students more autonomy in communicating and put them on the path towards functional communication!
