I want to build my classroom library. It is my 1st priority. My students don’t have books at home. In my English Language Arts Classroom, I find students will start reading a book if it’s something relatable to their lives.
The Young Hoosier Books are just that type of books for my library that my students love! Reading these books will allow them to leave their poverty, low socio-economic situations (94% of my students are on free or reduced lunches) behind and go into many different worlds and multi-cultural situations that they may have never imagined existed.
One book, Ghost, by Jason Reynolds, has been a book the students really love. It incorporates a relatable situation with solid solutions in society and growing more responsible in life.
Another book, Ms. Bixby’s Last Day by John David Anderson, is set at school and with middle school students. It shows compassion, understanding, and empathy, ALL necessary life skills for my students!
