Teaching an interdisciplinary 11th grade US History Class, I want to make it relevant to students today and incorporate beautifully written literature with the examination of the historic legacies of slavery and other injustices in our part playing out in our lives today. The 2 books I have selected are Ta-Nehisis Coates, Between the World and Me" and Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. Coates book is modern look at racial profiling, justice and equity in the US today as opposed to the past. It is a poignant father to son conversation that draws a through line in history and stimulates conversations about identity, community and inclusion. "Homegoing" is a novel that traces multiple generation from the start of the Slave trade to the current day. It parallels descendants lives of 2 sisters' family lineages in West Africa and the United States. It ties world history to US history, makes students face history across generations and look at oneself. Both of these books are exquisite literary accomplishments with a fresh, current voice. I will tie it together with the 1619 project from the New Work times to look at US history and the lives of all Americans from various lens. The texts provide more perspectives on what America was, is and can be. I hope to empower the students to feel engaged in making choices that make a future history of equity and inclusion.
