Nightly reading practice is such a HUGE part of first grade! In the past I have sent home a few leveled readers with my students in a Ziploc gallon sized bag. We call them "Baggie Books".
From this year forward, I want my students to have additional opportunities for nightly reading. In addition to the leveled readers, I want my students to have the opportunity to select a few favorite classroom books, take home a fluency folder to house reading passages and poems and to take home their small group readers.
I will send them home Monday-Thursday. I will collect them on Friday to get them ready for each Monday. I believe the kids need the weekend to just have FUN! They work hard all week and weekends are for family.
Giving them such a durable and roomy bag will reinforce how valuable nightly reading is. I will explain that becoming fluent readers is the most important work we will do this year and I feel it is so valuable that I am giving them a "cool' bag to use this year.
Each student will decorate their bag's name plate tag so they have ownership, choose several books that are of high interest to them and some practice material they have worked with in the class so they can feel successful and "show off" what they are learning at school with their families.
These bags have the potential to help several students for years to come because they are durable and washable. Not throw away plastic.
Thank you for your consideration.
