I am excited about having my self contained, 6th grade classroom able to operate in a more collaborative way. My students currently have a hodgepodge of desks that vary in size, in type, and in repair. Because the desks are so different, it makes collaborative work difficult. Some of my students are too tall to fit comfortably in their desks, so they have resorted to using comically small chairs.
These tables will provide my students with the opportunity to work on collaborative projects and to have a fluid classroom structure. By not having my students assigned to specific desks, but having tables, they are free to regroup for both projects and small group leveled instruction. I will be able to differentiate instruction to the variety of learning styles and levels of understanding present in my classroom.
