My students are young, full of energy, and deserving of recess and outdoor play time every single day. Due to my students coming from low-poverty backgrounds, they do not have the means to dress appropriately or comfortably for the winter weather, so we do not get outside to play for most of the winter season.
There is strong research that supports the connection between brain development and children having the opportunity to play outside in recess during their school day. When children have time to move and play outside they are developing pathways to the brain and learning. It has been proven that children are less fidgety, and more on task when they have recess, and recess provides a break where the brain can "regroup".
