I believe that having Scholastic Scope Magazines in my classroom will not only increase engagement, it will also contribute to making my students better global citizens. The content in the magazines is high interest, current, and allows the students to see outside of their small worlds. Increasing awareness of different cultures, world issues and people helps students become more tolerant of one another. Knowledge and tolerance is what will help students grow up to make positive differences in the world.
I have used Scholastic Scope in the past to talk about the water crisis in the Sudan, refugees from Syria, the poaching epidemic in Africa and Asia. Many of the students have no idea that these things are happening in our world. They are shocked and fascinated when reading these articles.
Many students also love the dramas that are in each Scope Magazine. In the past, I have allowed the class to select which drama they would like to complete. Giving my students choice in what they are reading gives them the power to become more responsible for their learning.
Since the articles are so interesting, the students are more apt to complete their work. Scope provides materials to cover the language arts skills that we practice on a daily basis. Not only are there skills-based activities but there are also videos that go along with many of the articles which increases class participation.
I look forward to giving my kiddos the opportunity to learn with Scholastic Scope Magazines!
