After 15 years of teaching elementary students, I decided to continue my educational practice and take the steps to become Nationally Board Certified in General Education ages 7-12. The past two years, I have taken all 4 Components that are required to be certified. This year, still committed to this process and my students, I will be retaking 2 of the components to try to boost up my score in order to certify.
This process has helped me reflect on my teaching practice and I have learned so much about the "why's" of my teaching.
Starting this process two years ago has helped me reflect on my teaching in more ways than one. Working on these components has helped me focus on the 5 Core Propositions for teaching.
1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
2. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
3. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
4. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
5. Teachers are members of learning communities.
Retaking 2 Components will help me learn more about best practices in education and how to make learning engaging for all students.
