Reading is key; even in digital times. Both physical and psychological proximity to books matter when it comes to children’s early literacy skills. This project will help me get engaging, high interest books into the hands of my third graders. The books will become part of my classroom library/reading corner that will be accessible to all students. Students will be able to go book "shopping" each week to add books to their person bins to read.
Studies show that increasing access to books increases the amount of reading children do, and increased reading leads to improved achievement in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary. I'm excited to see our future leaders become readers in my class this year. Third grade is a pivotal year in students' reading development. My goal is for my students to leave my room not only reading on or above grade level, but having a love for books and reading.
