I have an amazing position. I teach children with severe autism and down syndrome. Some of my students are non-verbal and have physical limitations requiring special headphones, pencil grips, and communication boards. While in the past, most have been in self contained classrooms, I encourage them to spend as much time in the general education classroom as possible. With the assistance of myself and paraprofessionals, my students participate in all lessons with their non-disabled peers as well as work on their IEP goals. While I spend time in general education classrooms, I do have my own classroom. My room is designed to calm and refocus my students with the goal of getting them back to their general education classroom. While my department is supposed to provide all of the specially designed equipment my students need, our budget just does not cover everything.
