By traveling to Washington D.C., our students will be able to learn about the United States government through a hands-on learning experience. Students will also visit the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Wall, and other important monuments located in Washington, D.C.
As predominantly young men and women of color, my students often feel underrepresented in the US government. By traveling to Washington, D.C., my students will be inspired to engage as active citizens. Also, as an extended learning project, students will be assigned a scavenger hunt that will help them to expand their knowledge of U.S. history. The scavenger hunt has a number of questions that they will need to answer while touring Washington D.C. For example, while visiting the World War II Memorial, students will be asked to answer the following question: "The Freedom Wall contains 4,000 commemorative gold stars. What does each gold star represent?"
Due to this field trip, students will become more aware of the significance of the monuments that represent our country's past. We truly appreciate your generosity in allowing us to help our students become more informed about our nation's history!
