My kinders, like many kinders around the world, are in families that are suffering due to COVID and the pandemic. Their families are busy trying to make ends meet and keep their sanity in a world with so many uncertainties. My families don’t have the energy to talk in-depth about diversity with their little ones and it’s not because they don’t desire to. With these diversity books I’ll be able to fill in some of the gap for my families when talking about diversity in a way that is suitable for my kinders. My kinders are eager to learn about different people in a world that haven’t fully experienced yet. I want to be able to take them to different countries, learn about cultural cuisines and meet people of many cultural backgrounds without buying a plane ticket. These diversity books will allow me to do that.
Due to the uncertainty of education at this time, my students and I never know when we’ll have to transition to learn at home. Everyday they leave my classroom, I make sure their bags are prepared for virtual learning. I make sure they have all the materials they need to connect with me from their homes because we never know. We’ve had to make this transition before. With the headphones my kinders will be able to focus better at home when learning. A lot of their homes have multiple learners and it can get loud and be distracting for a 5 or 6 year old.
The literacy materials will help me during guided reading with my kinders. At the beginning of the school year I asked each of them what they hoped to learn in kindergarten and they all stated they wanted to learn how to read. These materials will help them read.
