My school has a distinct lack of class sets of novels and books.
Any reader can tell you that there is something about holding a physical book. I can typically find digital copies of the texts that my class is reading. Who really enjoys reading on a phone or laptop? I can print up excerpts and make reading handouts on copy paper. It isn't the same.
The Things They Carried has consistently been one of the most well-received texts that my students read. It is raw, it is funny, it is heartbreaking, it is exciting, it is incredibly real (even, or maybe especially, when it isn't). It is also relatively expensive and difficult to find in a used form, which means that my low socioeconomic status students sometimes struggle to get copies of it.
Having a class set of the text on hand would alleviate these issues and provide greater access to the students that need it the most.
