My hope in choosing these texts in to expose my students to a world outside of their own. I want them to read the stories of other culture, real and imaginary, and compare them to their own. I want them to learn how people can be different from them and still be good people.
We have an overabundance of adult and classic novels taught in the school but do not have any young adult novels. They will read about young adults encountering obstacles in their lives and discuss how the characters deal with those obstacles. We, as a class, will be able to talk about obstacles they may encounter in their lives and ways to overcome them.
