My students will travel through Chinese folklore as they read along with this Newberry-Honored tale. Grace Lin has created my favorite adventure story and I share it with my students every year! It gives me, their English teacher, a chance to infuse my curriculum with Chinese history, legend and culture. Together we notice the details and talk about the research and writer’s craft as we wonder what will happen next. MinLi is on a quest to change her family’s poor fortune when she finds out that she already has everything she needs to change it. What IS the word written over and over again on the elusive slip of paper? What IS the secret to happiness?
