Having these materials will help my students be successful in a few different areas. We create vision boards on their writing journal, concrete (visual) poems, and group essays, where we dissect certain areas of the essay and color code them; making crayons and markers essential.
Having arts/crafts materials available will help the students visually see specific parts of the essay. This translates into more well-produced essays. Most students are not able to bring individual supplies due to the aftermath (still) of Hurricane Harvey. Not having the necessary materials in class causes them to be unsuccessful, and causes a hindrance to the learning environment.
