Our classroom is focusing on building trusting relationships with each other, and we are utilizing whole group/classroom meetings to achieve this. Children who have experienced trauma or have chaotic homes are more likely to lash out against what is new to them. Their brains interpret "new" as "scary" and essentially goes into protection made. It is my goal to help my students learn that "new" is not necessarily scary and that school is a safe place. We do a lot of this learning during our whole group instruction/classroom meetings. I empower students throughout the day, but especially during this time, which helps them to develop peers relationships.
We are looking to purchase a large carpet to help facilitate this learning. The carpet will give everyone a space of their own, but will keep us close to each other to promote constructive conversations and instruction. This will help students to feel safe and secure at school.
