"I Kill Giants" is a young adult graphic novel that focuses on a young girl named Barbara Thornson, who, on the surface, appears to be a bizarre girl with unusual predilections for Dungeons & Dragons and famed, ancient Phillies pitcher Harry Covaleski.
Like all good stories, this is nothing but the surface: Barbara's friends and the school psychologist slowly unravel mystery behind the "giants" she is working so hard to battle--in the process of uncovering this mystery, students will come to empathize with the shocking, gut-punch of a reveal about the real nature of these Giants that Barbara has taken upon herself to slay, and through her growth, my students will be able to see that they, too, can slay the giants in their lives.
By donating to this project, you will be giving my students a chance to discuss a text that is truly relevant to their lives in a way that most of the classic canon can not confidently be said to apply. The graphic nature of the graphic novel--the class set that your donations will buy--will foster deep, critical discussions about bullying, preconceptions, friendship, and more: like all good literature, it will also engender empathy, which today's kids need to learn more than ever. Please, donate and allow my students a learning experience that reaches beyond the staid world of testing and rote essay writing and into their hearts, one that will stay with them long after anything I've taught directly has been long forgotten.
