I teach an inclusion class which means that I teach special education students along with those that are not on an individual learning plan (IEP). The students that are on an IEP generally have trouble focusing and have a harder time learning or learn differently from other students. I try to give flexible seating so that the students have the ability to move around while I am teaching, I find that this often distracts the other students and causes disruptions. If my grant is approved I will use the money on stability ball chairs that allow children to move in a quiet way that does not disrupt the classroom.
This movement will enable to children to remain seated and focused but gives them the freedom to stretch and move as needed. These chairs would be used both at tables and when working in partners in groups. Having these chairs would give me the flexibility to break my class into many different groups for small and whole group instruction.
