The math dice will be used by the students to create and then solve their own problems. We work on order of operations and the students can use these to fill in the numbers in a problem they create and then solve.
We introduce integers (negatives) in 6th grade and the thermometer is a natural example of real life math. Having a giant one posted on the wall will help throughout the year.
The Keva blocks, play dough and books will be used individually or in small groups daily to activate student brains without paper and pencil busy work.
I chose the books to mirror the varied students' backgrounds. Many of these books are on the suggested list from the district for sixth grade students. They all talk about individuals who go through great changes in their lives which 6th graders relate to.
