Social Emotional Learning is crucial for students. One way I look forward to incorporating SEL into my classroom this year is through read aloud books. Read alouds are effective for teaching students because students are able to connect with the characters. Students are able to empathize with characters and put themselves in the character's positions. We talk about the words, actions, thoughts, and choices of the characters. Students are reflective of the actions taken in the story, and think about what they would do if they were in that situation.
Read alouds are a great way to teach both language arts skills and social emotional skills. Students can identify the main character, setting, conflict, and identify other story elements. They are also exposed to new vocabulary through read alouds.
I am hoping to purchase read aloud books that allows me to teach SEL and literacy skills at the same time. In many books, such as "The Water Princess", students are able to practice ELA skills, SEL skills, learn about the cultures of other children around the world, and the water cycle all in one book. These books will allow me to maximize my time and effectiveness in teaching these content areas through one book.
