All students deserve to be given ways to help them focus and engage in their learning to the best of their ability. There are three second grade classes in my school, and for these 70 students we share a cart of 30 iPads. To go along with these iPads, we have an extremely dated and dysfunctional set of about 10 headphones.
Every day, all three classes split up into literacy and math groups for center time. During this time, their learning is enhanced by using apps such as Lexia, DreamBox, and Reflex Math. This year, we have noticed that while students are using their iPads at that center, it is almost impossible to concentrate if you do not have a set of working headphones. Picture a group of 10 students sitting around a table, all with an iPad in front of them, leaning their heads in trying to hear the instructions for the activity. Our students become distracted and have a hard time deciphering whose iPad is saying what. This forces them to have instructions repeated and it takes away from their learning.
Adding 40 headphones to our cart of iPads will ensure that during center times, each student will have access to a working pair of headphones. This will ensure that every student is able to fully engage in their learning at their stations and fully understand the activities they are doing! Their tiny ears will be able to understand, and they will all be able to succeed!
