Each year, the students I work with experience a "summer slide." This means they lose valuable reading skills over the summer that must be retaught in the fall.
The main reason for the summer slide is not having access to quality books to read. I have partnered with our district's summer feeding program. These are designated locations (i.e. parks, schools) where students can go to get a meal for free during the months school is out of session. Two of those designated areas are walking distance for most of our students. Each Tuesday and Thursday, I would like to bring books to these places for our students to check out or read with me. This way they will be able to practice their reading skills all summer, and return to school ready to move forward with their learning. This past year several students, especially ESL students, did not catch up to the level they were in the Spring until November. All of these students live walking distance from the areas I want to serve.
Because I develop such a close relationship with students, I believe that many of them will be excited to come and read with me and to check out a book to read. These kids are typically not able to go the Public Library for a variety of reasons. I want to bring the books to them.
