Rich literature is the key to a complete children's library. Through books, we can learn so much about the world around us. Of course, a well written book feeds our love for reading. Books can take us to far away lands and expose us to experiences we may never have in real life. Many times, without even realizing it, we are also learning important life lessons such as sharing, responsibility, perseverance and honesty (just to name a few) through storybooks. Characters in a story can help model the character traits that we would like to develop within ourselves. When a child reads about a character that they connect with, it can help them feel more confident and better understood. Children's literature is a key teaching tool to help develop whole, well-rounded students and to address a variety of social issues that we all encounter in the real world.
