On a daily basis my students struggle to remain in their classroom when they are experiencing a moment of frustration- taking away from their instructional time in class. Due to their disabilities, behavioral, academic and social-emotional challenges, my student resort to running away from their frustrations and storming out their classroom. On multiple occasions they would say "Ms. Rosario, I just need 5 to 10 minutes to myself". I have to tell them "Just put your head down on your desk."
Let's face it- have you tried putting your head down on a desk? It's SUPER uncomfortable! And if you are frustrated or upset, you would not want someone saying "Just put your head down on your desk". This is why my students and I have come up with the idea of "Chill Corners"! A HUGE bean bag awaits, inspirational/calming posters surround you and a tablet is provided to help you reflect on your behaviors/actions. The tablets will be used as a modern day journal. Where the students can write their frustrations away and reset themselves to have a successful rest of their day!
