In today's increasingly technologically dependent world, students often sacrifice their reading lives in favor of using technology. However, students who read are able to build vocabulary, perspective, and empathy.
I make it my mission in the classroom to have books on hand so that every student can ignite or even reignite his or her passion for reading.
By adding current and relevant titles such as, "Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom", "These Truths: A History of the United States", and "Darius the Great Is Not Ok" to my classroom library, students are sure to find a book that will capture their interests and minds. Providing students with choice and an array of titles will be the first step in creating a community of readers. The second step will be giving my students the time to read and share. My students will be well on their way to becoming lifelong readers before they exit my door.
