Social emotional learning is defined by CASEL as how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Social emotional learning helps to develop and support students socially, emotionally, and behaviorally, to ensure academic success. The Louisiana Department of Education Social Emotional Learning and Academic Integration program builds stronger school climates to drive academic success and emotional well-being. Students need SEL skills to engage in academic content, experience academic success, and become productive adults in society. Students will need assistance with navigating through change, adapting to new expectations, and whatever else life has thrown at them. These tools will not only help teach students how to process and express themselves through these difficult times either through whole group classroom lessons, group counseling lessons, or individual counseling, but will allow them to "let the good times roll" through counseling education.
