In a class poll, my students hands down chose the novel "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio to read as our class novel. We will then use this as a platform for essay writing. The poignant topics of bullying, acceptance of others, people with disabilities and unique differences, and self-love are so relevant for today's youth. I feel I could make this the novel that sparks a love of reading in so many and teaches concepts that are essential in our troubled society.
So many youth have lost the "wonder" of childhood and the innocent view of others that children should have. Palacio's novel has received critical acclaim and been made into a movie because of its message. Through this novel, I can teach reading comprehension, essay writing, research, and real life concepts. Then we will watch the movie and do a comparison of the written and the film versions.
