Both of the novels I chose for this project are classics. They have been studied for years and have proven to be excellent tools for learning about their respective historical eras, as well as, formidable resources for English instruction. The Great Gatsby is a timeless tale of the opulence, exuberance, and naivete of life during the "Roaring Twenties!" By reading this novel, students are introduced to the Jazz Age/ 1920s, cultural/ emotional appeals, and elevated language techniques famously utilized by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. This novel is read during a unit on modern American authors and completed through whole-group, small-group, partner, and individual activities focusing on the figurative and literal language and the historical relevance. Animal Farm is completed the same way; however, it contains a completely different historical era. Animal Farm is read by students in the ninth grade and/or who have taken World History so they will have prior knowledge of the Russian Revolution. This novels allows us to explore allegory, because all of the characters in the novel represent Historical figures from the Communist Revolution in Russia. Both of these books will be exceptional assets to my classroom instruction and very interesting reads for my students.
