Art offers so much to students' ability to absorb information and express themselves creatively. Studies have shown that when your brain is exposed to concepts like music, dance, or art, especially in the formative years, it helps make it easier to understand more academic concepts.
So many children are kinesthetic learners and far too seldom are they given the opportunity to express themselves by creating a three dimensional piece of artwork. I want my students to have that same opportunity.
I can tell you that I still have projects that I made out of clay from my elementary school days, and for many of my students this will be their first opportunity to create a sculpture of their own. We will learn the three basic hand building methods; pinch pot, coils, and slab. Once the students become familiar with these methods, they will have the opportunity to create a project of their own that they can cherish for a lifetime.
