Third graders need a strong conceptual understanding of fractions. Part of my project focuses on helping children visualize, then internalize, the meaning of fractions. This skill will carry over into many areas of mathematics.
Another part of my project is focused on helping children have hands-on experience with clocks and telling time. We learn about elapsed time, which is a difficult concept for many students. Having their own clock to manipulate, while I use a large one for all to see, will help them develop important skills and increase their confidence.
