In an area where diversity is not prominent, my students love to learn about other places. They love to learn about others' daily lives, schooling, traditions, and even foods that are different from their own. Most of my students never make it outside of the state, so to be able to read about another culture brings to life for them what life can be like outside of their own area. The students also love reading from actual books, more so than on a tablet or computer screen. They are very hands-on students.
This classroom set of the book Gracias (Thanks) will help to not only engage my students, but also to help them learn about diversity and what it means to live in another culture, while learning a new language, as well! Practicing reading another language aloud is a good way for students to learn and remember new words and phrases. These books, while meant for younger students, will be a great starting point for the students in learning about another language and culture.
