A safe, welcoming, and relaxing reading space would complete my special education kindergarten classroom. The benefits of reading and exposure to books immensely support language and communication development in all students, especially those who are low to non-verbal.
Having this reading area in my classroom can also help when students require a quick break to deescalate or regroup after difficult behaviors. A quick reading break using social stories or books about emotions can help my students with autism learn to identify and regulate their emotions which will greatly increase their participation in classroom lessons and activities. All students can find pleasure and benefit from an age/size appropriate reading couch.
