The books on this list serve two purposes. First, they are mentor texts that can teach skills in literature. Four Famished Foxes teach alliteration, and The King who Rained can teach about idioms. Using these books will give them concrete examples of each skill that can build our basic literacy skills.
In addition, these books build a background in traditional literature. My students don't know many basic folk tales and fairy tales and I want to build this knowledge of cultural heritage from various places around the world. How Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ears can give them stories from Africa, and American Tall Tales can give them our own folk heritage.
