I am requesting a new set of the book Monster by Walter Dean Myers. For two years, my 8th graders have been reading the book, and even the ones who hate reading ends loving the book.
Through the study of this book, students will understand the importance of family, justice, and self-discovery.
As an ELA teacher, I want to provide a different and inspiring reading for my students. Reading this book will help them to understand certain things of life, such as justice.
This novel follows a black boy growing up in Harlem who is accused of committing a robbery. Steve maintains that he is innocent, but experiences racial profiling, confronts his identity, and is forced to reckon with the justice system as a minor who is charged as an adult. This novel helps entice students who are not naturally inclined to read. It is hard-hitting content, different format (a screenplay and journal entries), and themes leave students begging to read more.
