In 6th grade, students start working with large numbers, especially when they are figuring out surface area of objects, multiplying decimals, and dividing decimals. Once they know the process of these, it helps to have a calculator to check their work and make the process less tedious. We all have calculators now on our cell phones, so we want to allow students to practice using them, once they understand how to solve a process. The calculators also help them check their work, which helps them become more self-sufficient and prepares them for moving on to upper grades. Using a calculator is now available to all of us, so it is a skill our students need to practice
