My students really suffer from lack of tools in the social-emotional learning department. There is a lot of violence and parent/family absenteeism, and the students do not get the chance to learn how to cope with their feelings very well. Instead, they tend to have outbursts (I had a student just today who was pounding the wall, shouting swear words, and throwing objects, unable to express verbally that she was frustrated). Unfortunately, this is a school wide issue. I am hoping that the Kimochis and Max and Millie dolls will aid me in helping the students learn about coping with emotions and feelings in a way that is healthy for all in the school, and will also have a long term lasting impact in their lives.
