Most of my funny, kind, hardworking students will probably never leave the state. They will rarely, if ever, have a conversation with someone from another culture or race. Without that opportunity for direct interaction, their view of the world and their opinions about the people in it will remain limited.
Students whose experience has been predominantly white and rural will not be able to embrace the increasingly diverse country in which we live. Unless they are given opportunities to consider other viewpoints and discuss the racial divide that seems to be growing in the US. Reading All American Boys will help broaden their scope of what justice and injustice really mean.
