Students read in my classroom everyday. These books can be mirrors of themselves as well as windows into others' lives. I believe through choice reading, students develop a greater sense of empathy and understanding of characters whose lives may be different than their own. Also, students seek out characters and stories that are mirrors of themselves, allowing them to not feel alone. Books and stories lend each of us this access. Books and stories help build a classroom community. I need my classroom library to grow so to provide students this opportunity.
By bringing in a diverse collection of authors and stories, I believe that a greater number of my students will find books that speak to them, that reflect who they are, and that will show them how they too are able to find their voice as writers, speakers, and individuals.
