As a school counselor, I have found that the use of bibliotherapy has been one of the strongest resources available to me. These written resources have allowed me to teach character building by focusing on the social and emotional needs of students in an innovative and creative way. The books I am requesting will be utilized during individual and/or small group counseling, as well as classroom guidance lessons.
As some of research’s most rigorous studies have shown, elementary students have difficulty navigating their emotions. That is, every child may experience a variety of life events from divorce to death, and with these experiences come great emotions.
The items I have requested, such as the Kinetic Sand, building blocks, magnetic tiles, and dinosaurs will help my students regulate high emotions by providing them with a calming frame of mind. These items will be used as "calm down tools", ice breaker activities, and incentives for positive behavior. The worry eater plush will be utilized as a comfort pillow/friend. Additionally, the tractor seats will help create a fun and inviting atmosphere that will diminish the stigma of coming to see the counselor. Lastly, the pool and balls will be used as a "Make A Friend" ball pit for friendship/team building activities during school-wide events such as Red Ribbon Week.
