The materials I have asked for are necessary for daily student engagement in an elementary classroom. Hands on activities that require students to create using scissors, glue, and construction paper are a great way to include all student's learning modalities! They can also be used as alternative informal assessments to the traditional paper and pencil assessments. For example, students may summarize a book they've read by creating a poster rather than just writing a paragraph on paper. Another example, students create puppets to "retell" stories which is a required skill for formal testing. One of our Math units is Measurement: students need to use ruler, tape measure, and yard sticks to measure real objects to problem solve.
Students that are given the opportunity to create are highly engaged and will retain more information!
