I am the music teacher at Calvin Donaldson. Our students love to play basketball. I found it hard this year to connect with each student on a personal level during instruction. Outside of class we can find something to connect with, but in class the toughest of kids (behavior) will stop when I pull out a basketball. We stand in a circle and pass a basketball all around the room. We take turns bouncing in different rhythms.
Did you know it takes rhythm to play a basketball? In this project, every student in our school will use them. Students in lower grades will try to copy what I do. Students in upper grades will read the music on the board and play it with their basketballs. I even have plans of using these basketballs during a routine that they bounce to music. They would perform this for their parents and for our school during a school performance night. This could be so so cool.
