My class consists of twenty 4th and 5th graders who attend a public intermediate school in California. The small town they live in is made up of underprivileged through middle class people. Our school enrollment demographics consist of 60% white, 36% Hispanic or latino, and 4% other. All of my students are in special education. Most of them have a specific learning disability, affecting their ability to read text and to understand math concepts. Some of them are also English Language Learners.
Learning disabilities often require many different learning approaches to master concepts. To be an effective Special Education teacher, I must approach problems at different angles. For example, some of my students are visual learners and do better when pictures and text are used. Some do better with the hands on approach. Often a combination of two or more learning styles is required. Bottom line is all of my students are preforming below grade level and need RSP for academic success.
