Cooking made simple for students with developmental disabilities. The students are taking an all year Sports and Leisure class in which they are learning to cook and bake twice a week. We use the home ec. room that has a functional kitchen but no supplies. I have been purchasing all the items myself when we cook. My students need the kitchen to have real equipment to utilize in the classroom.
The students need a mixer because when they are working on their baking skills, we need more tools to assist them. The students will learn how to use the mixer for baking different items. They all make cakes, cupcakes or cheese cakes for their birthday. A majority of my students do not celebrate their birthday in their home at the high school level. I would like to show them how to make breads, cobblers, and ice creams using the mixer.
They will use the cookbook to follow recipes using pictures and various print styles. I have four students who are either reading at the low first grade level or need pictures to communicate. They will also take the recipes home so the families can cook with them. This will reinforce what they learned in the classroom.
