Reading is an essential and daily activity in my classroom. I have protected time infused within the instructional day for guided reading and independent reading.
Currently, I do not have any books in my classroom that appeal to what my students would be interested in reading. The books I have are tattered and torn. I want my students to be able to read books that align with the common core and will enjoy. These books that I have chosen are rich in informational text and I can use graphic organizers and infuse other content areas in with the lessons.
For example, the book Hidden Figures takes place during the civil rights movement. I can teach about what life was like during that time for minorities, as well as the inequality of social injustice during that time. The book aligns with science, social studies (geography) and language arts. There is much that can be done with this reading material.
