When students enter my classroom, most of them come with no desire of reading. In fact, they hate the idea of choosing a book for SSR. It is not uncommon that by the time students reach high school, their love of reading has banished.
Students' attention and interest is centered on social media and not on their academics. Engulfing themselves in a novel and experiencing the thrill of the anticipation of what's coming next, is something that most of my students have not experienced. However, I believe this is a reflection of our culture change and not on their education experience.
Reading is a key focus in my classroom and for the first year, I have experienced an increased amount of eagerness and yearning towards reading from my students. Several of them are on their ninth/tenth novel this year and are asking for more books to read. I have adopted Carol Jago and Kelly Gallagher’s methods of increasing literacy in my class and it is successfully encouraging students to read all different kinds of books throughout the year.
However, my classroom library is very limited and I am running out options to offer to my students. It saddens me every time they ask me if I have any more books and I have to say no. My goal is build a classroom library that encompasses a selection of genres, authors, and stories. I want my students to connect with the characters in the books they are reading, to discover the world through the stories they read, and to enjoy the experience of the magic that only a book can create in someone's life. I am asking for twenty-nine books including On The Come Up; Every Breath; and Then She Was Gone: A Novel.
