My classroom has a small library for students to choose books to read during our “Silent Reading” time after lunch each day. Unfortunately, we have a very small selection of books in Spanish. I have 8 students who have been reading this same small collection for weeks. Many of these students spent time in detention camps before coming to our school, so they really do not have access to books at home.
To me, this is an issue of equity and access to the curriculum for ALL students regardless of language ability.
One of my students said the books that are most helpful for him are those that have concurrent translation (both Spanish and English side by side on the page).
This would also benefit all 27 students who are currently taking Spanish class. Knowledge of their first language also helps my students strengthen family relations through bilingual communication.
